2018 IRS MILEAGE RATES

The Internal Revenue Service issued the 2018 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical, or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2018, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups, or panel trucks) will be:

  •     54.5 cents for every mile of business travel driven, up 1 cent from the rate for 2017.

  •     18 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, up 1 cent from the rate for 2017.

  •     14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The business mileage rate and the medical and moving expense rates each increased 1 cent per mile from the rates for 2017. The charitable rate is set by statute and remains unchanged.

PASTORS SEEKING RETIREMENT AT THE 2018 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Active pastors under appointment (local church and extension ministry) who are considering requesting the Retired Relationship at the 2018 Session of Annual Conference are urged to check paragraph No. 357, page 304, in the 2016 Book of Discipline. I call your attention to the second sentence of the opening statement.

"Requests for retirement shall be stated in writing to the bishop, Cabinet, and the Board of Ordained Ministry at least one hundred twenty days prior to the date on which retirement is to be effective unless waived by the bishop and Cabinet."

If you are considering retirement at the 2018 Session of Annual Conference, please be sure to honor the time restriction. As indicated in the 2016 Book of Discipline, your request should be sent to the bishop. Please copy your request letter to your district superintendent, with additional copies to the Rev. Suzanne Elliott, chairperson of the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, Rev. Pat Woolever, chairperson of the Board's Conference Relations Committee, and Kelly Cox, Conference Pension Officer.

If you have any additional questions, please be sure to contact your district superintendent and/or the Episcopal office.
